What people liked about this Piper home security system
No monthly fees – The fact there are no monthly fees for this security system is seen as a big bonus. Similar devices, like the Canary, do come with fees. It makes the system affordable for most families.
Fully powered system – People also liked the fact the system could run via their home electricity system. Battery powered systems are good, but the cost of having to change the batteries every few months soon adds up.
Easy to set up – Most users found this security system extremely easy to set up. Many said they did it in 5 minutes. However, some users found it harder to get the Z-wave accessories up and running.
Ability to programme it to ignore your pets – If you have pets in the house, you can adjust the sensitivity, so that the camera is not triggered unnecessarily.
Two-way audio – The two-way audio feature was very useful. Many users used it to speak to family members and to calm pets down.
Full 180-degree view – This camera offers an excellent field of vision, and it really does capture images across the entire 180-degrees.
Multi-user capability – Unlike some other systems, Piper provides the ability to set up multiple users to control the system.
Ability to expand the system – The fact it is possible to incorporate door and window sensors into the system was something many users liked. You have to buy these separately, but they are easy to set up.
Piper really listens to their customers – One of the things that was not available when this system was first released is auto rearm. Users asked for this feature and within a few months, the Piper team had provided this feature. This company is clearly responsive and supportive, a good sign that their products are worth buying.
Power and Wi-Fi outage alerts – if the power goes out or your Wi-Fi goes down you are sent a text or email alert. That gives you the option to send a key holder or neighbour in to reset your router or electric.
Potential issues highlighted by reviewers
After reviewing consumer products for many years we have noticed that most tech products have issues when they are first released.
As the Piper security system had only released in early 2015 we were expecting reviewers to report a few teething problems. They did, but hardly any compared to other security surveillance cameras we have reviewed, and most of the issues highlighted early on have clearly been fixed.
Here is a summary of the small niggles some users reported while using the Piper security system. We have ignored issues we know that the Piper team has actually addressed.
Not able to access system via a PC – you can only use this system if you have an iOS or Android device.
Faulty units received – most of the one star reviews were from users who had received a faulty unit. They were clearly upset, so wrote one star reviews. However, most appear to have received a replacement unit straight away. The issue seemed to be resolved, but the review rating was not upgraded.
As you can see, overall this is an excellent home security product, which we are more than happy to recommend.
